About Us
The Merritt Island Band Program is a thriving 7th–12th grade music program that provides students with a seamless six-year musical experience through the partnership between Jefferson Middle School and Merritt Island High School. Led by Kevin Bennett, Director of Bands for grades 9–12, and Shane O'Leary, Director of Bands for grades 7–8, the program offers a wide variety of performance opportunities, including Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, the award-winning Marching Mustangs, and Color Guard. Our program is dedicated to developing musicianship, leadership, teamwork, discipline, and lifelong friendships while inspiring students to achieve excellence both on and off the stage and field.
The success of our program is made possible through the support of the Band Booster Organization (BBO), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of dedicated parents, alumni, and community members. Through volunteer service, fundraising, and community partnerships, the BBO helps provide instruments, uniforms, equipment, scholarships, travel opportunities, and educational experiences that enrich every student's journey. Together, our directors, families, volunteers, and supporters are committed to fostering a tradition of excellence and ensuring every Mustang musician has the opportunity to grow, perform, and succeed.
